Cat Cat (prod ref: wvcat)
Cat - sitting - front profile

Cats have been domesticated since prehistoric times, perhaps for 5,000 years or more; there is evidence (from a Neolithic grave on Cyprus) of some sort of association with humans dating back to the 8th cent. B.C. Cats have been greatly valued as destroyers of vermin, as well as for their ornamental qualities. The ancient Egyptian domestic cat, which spread to Europe in historic times, was used as a retriever in hunting as well as for catching rats and mice. It was probably derived from Felis lybica or one of the other North African wildcats. The modern domestic cat, F. catus, is probably descended from this animal, perhaps with an admixture of other wildcat species, or of species domesticated at various times in other parts of the world. Cats were venerated in the ancient Egyptian and Norse religions, and they have also been the object of superstitious fear, especially in the Middle Ages, when they were tortured and burned as witches!

A male cat is usually called a tom cat, a female cat is called a queen. A young cat is called a kitten. A cat whose ancestry is officially registered is called a purebred cat or a Pedigreed cat or a Show cat. The owners and breeders of show cats compete to see who can breed the cat with the closest resemblance to the 'ideal' definition of the breed. Less than one percent of the total feline population are purebred cats - the remaining 99% have mixed ancestry and are generally known as moggies, or more properly domestic longhairs and domestic shorthairs.

Cat playing with mouse (prod ref: wvcatm)
Cat playing with mouse.

At some point the African Wildcat, a small yellow cat with black stripes, the ancestor of modern day domestic cats, began coming into the cities to feast on the abundance of rodents. The Egyptians welcomed their new neighbors when they realized that the Wildcats were killing off the rodents. Many people began leaving small scraps of food outside their houses to encourage the Wildcats to hunt at their home. The cats soon began to stay in the cities because there they had more than enough to eat. The cats were also protected from being hunted because their predators in the wild would not dare come near humans. The cats and humans seemed to be well matched for each other.

It was in this simple beginning that the relationship between cats and humans began. Most likely, Egyptians began letting the Wildcats into their homes, where they allowed them to stay to protect the food from rodents. Soon after their initial domestication, the people probably began petting and stroking the beautiful animals, and cats, being naturally affectionate animals, loved the attention.

Cat stalking mouse Cat stalking mouse (prod ref: wvcatm1)
Cat stalking a mouse.

Cats are kept for companionship as pets, and to hunt mice and rats. Farms often have dozens of cats, living semi-wild in the barns. Hunting in the barns and the fields, they kill and eat rodents that would otherwise eat large parts of the grain crop. (Many pet cats successfully hunt and kill mice, birds and fish by instinct, but might not eat their prey). Feral cats may live alone or in large groups called colonies with communal nurseries, depending on resource availability.

Cat approaching mouse (prod ref: wvcatm2)

After all, their cat is loved and well fed. Why should their pet bother hunting down birds, mice and other wildlife? If a domestic cat has any access at all to the outside world then it will hunt, no doubt about it, its all part of being a cat.

A cat will hunt whether it is hungry or not, hunting is an instinctive need within your cat. The fact is a well fed and healthy cat is more likely to be an effective hunter of prey, than an ill fed feral cat.

The cat, Felis silvestris catus, is a small feline carnivore that has been domesticated for several millennia. The term cat most commonly means a domestic cat, although it can also be used to refer to the other members of the feline family. For example lions, tigers, jaguars and the like are often referred to as the big cats.

By providing this information you agree that we may check your membership for validation of this discount but we will not use this data for any other purpose.

  2. Select the appropriate option below and click "Add to shopping cart" to select this option.

  3. Choose the product to go with the shape you have chose from our choice of products (weathervane, bracket or pet memorial) including the finish of your choice and add it to the shopping cart. The product price includes a standard shape (unless indicated otherwise).

  4. If you are supplying an image (taking advantage of the FREE offer):

    1. Locate a suitable graphic image, where the image or outline of the shape is clearly defined. If possible the graphic should be in sillhouette form in GIF format and file size of less than 200kb. However, we often work from suitable photographs. A side on profile normally works best, though it may help to ensure that distinguishing features are visible to have the head turned towards to camera.

We reserve the right to charge the normal undiscounted price if the image is, in our opinion, not suitable for inclusion in our Catalog. In this case we will advise you before proceeding with the order and give you an option to cancel.

  5. Note: ensure that the e-mail address which you send it from is the same as the address given in your order, so we can match the image with this order item, or provide details of the e-mail address on the order when you send the image.
